About the course

Brief Description of the Course:

This is a roll on / roll off course that is available to individuals. Students start off on the award qualification and have the opportunity to build up through the Certificate to the Diploma qualification.

The Award qualification consists of 3 units or 'practical skills'. The Certificate qualification consists of 6 units/ 18 credits, or ‘practical skills’. The Diploma qualification consists of 13 units, or ‘practical skills’. The skills vary according to the delivery location and the time of year.

This course is ideal for individuals who want to know more about horticulture and planting, want to spend more time working outside for health reasons, want to develop a new hobby or improve their employability skills.

Entry Requirements:

Just a keen interest in horticulture and gardening.

This course is suitable for adults with a range of needs. Applicants/ carers should contact the college to discuss individual needs and available support before committing to the course.

Ideally applicants should be 19+, legally able to live and work in England and not be attending other government funded courses. In certain circumstances we may be able to accommodate students age 15-18, this must be discussed with the college before application.

Course Units:

There are 161 units to choose from. There are 4 mandatory units, usually completely during the Award and Certificate Qualifications. Optional units are selected according to student interest, the site and seasonality.

Mandatory units:

• Prepare the ground for sowing or planting under supervision

• Plant container grown subjects

• Prepare soil and apply organic mulch

• Water a bed, border or area of plants in containers

Examples of optional units include:

• Prune hedges by hand

• Prune deciduous shrubs flowering on current season’s growth

• Support plants on wires, frames or trellis

• Repair damaged turf with seed

• Maintain hand tools

Learning and Assessment:

Every student builds up a portfolio of evidence, which is a record of the practical assessments that have been completed. Student’s practical skills are assessed through observation of practical work and assessor questioning confirms their understanding.

RHS Level 2 Principles of Horticulture (Part-time course for Adults)

L2 Award in the Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides (PA1)

L2 Award in the Safe Application of Pesticides Using Pedestrian Hand Held Equipment (PA6a)

L2 Award in the Safe Application of Pesticides Using Pedestrian Hand Held Equipment (QCF) - Near Water (PA6aw)

Level 2 CG Award in Landbased Fork Lift Truck Operations - 3 Day

Level 2 CG Certificate of Competence in Tractor Driving and Related Operations - Agriculture

CG Level 2 Award in Sit-in All Terrain Vehicle Handling
