Utility Arboriculture programme on track with first cohort
Published: Tuesday 17 February 2026This week marked the launch of Myerscough College’s new Test and Learn project - an innovative six‑month training programme designed to give students from the Liverpool City Region a hands‑on introduction to the specialist field of utility arboriculture.
A total of 19 students began the inaugural cohort at Myerscough’s Croxteth Park centre, embarking on a comprehensive learning journey that blends classroom theory with industry‑recognised practical qualifications.
Over the duration of the programme, students will complete four key theory units covering Health and Safety, Tree Identification, Plant and Soil Science and Tree Surveying Techniques.
Alongside these units, learners will gain a suite of essential arboricultural qualifications, including +F Forestry First Aid, Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross‑Cutting Tree Climbing, and aerial rescue.
To mark the launch, students were joined by Stephen Lowe, Network Rail Project Manager, who played an integral role in shaping the programme with Myerscough College.

Stephen shared valuable insights into the scale of vegetation management across the railway network, as well as his personal journey from a YTS student to managing a £30 million vegetation management programme for Network Rail.
His session provided inspiration and context for students as they begin exploring career pathways within the industry.
In addition to the guest talk, learners were enrolled onto their qualification modules, received access to online learning resources, and took part in an introductory session delivered by tutor Alex Pendlebury, focusing on tree identification and health and safety.
The programme will conclude with final assessments and a showcase event where students will meet a range of industry partners, opening doors to employment, apprenticeships, and further training opportunities.

Alex McKelvie, Curriculum Area Manager for Agriculture, Arboriculture and Forestry at Myerscough College, said: “It was great to see the students start this programme.
‘’From the initial concept of the course in November to now, we have worked closely with industry to shape the six‑month curriculum into something that will genuinely benefit learners, whether through gaining employment, progressing to an apprenticeship, or developing lifelong skills.
‘’The Liverpool City Region Test and Learn scheme is a fantastic opportunity for colleges to pilot new initiatives, and I can already see this programme having a significant impact on the lives of our students while helping address the major skills shortage within the sector.
‘’Thank you to Stephen Lowe and Network Rail for their input in designing the course and for being present at the launch.”
Myerscough College looks forward to seeing the progress of the first cohort and the positive outcomes the programme will create for both learners and the wider arboricultural industry.
