Myerscough students enjoy incredible South Africa experiences

42 students and five members of staff jetted off for the two week enrichment adventure, undertaking a wide variety of activities, including:

Taking part in elephant and rhino monitoring

Setting up camera traps and learning about track and sign identification

Taking part in bird ringing

Identifying individual giraffes on a giraffe walk

Learning about the work of the anti-poaching unit

Taking part in abseiling and kayaking

Vaccinating goats for the local community

The group were also lucky enough to be able to spot four of the ‘big five’, all while quickly learning how to survive in a tent in temperatures as low as minus two degree celcius in the middle of the African bush.

The trip proved to be an unforgettable experience and a fantastic opportunity for students to get practically involved and develop new skills and experiences outside of the classroom and in the field.

Jake Rogers, Animal Studies Curriculum Area Manager, said: ‘’It was an incredible two weeks in South Africa, where our learners have fully immersed themselves in the culture and embraced every opportunity and challenge that came their way.

‘’They have faced their fears by holding insects and abseiling down a rock face, demonstrated their practical skills by vaccinating goats within the local community, spotted four of the Big Five, and taken part in some amazing practical lectures and experiences covering venomous animals, camera trapping, anti-poaching and bird ringing.

‘’I am incredibly proud to have watched the learners grow in confidence, form lifelong friendships and, above all, demonstrate their industry readiness through every practical task set.’’
