Students from all subjects and campuses have been invited to get creative, with a competition that aims to promote the importance of literacy skills in everyday life.

The competition encourages entries of up to a maximum of 300 words, and can be a story, a poem or a description of something Myerscough College related or inspired.

Rachel Newton, Teaching and Learning Coach at Myerscough, explains more: ‘’English is often seen as a subject you ‘have to do’, but the project is aimed around getting enjoyment from the subject too, and opening eyes to the positive impact reading and writing can have on your life.

‘’This year we are creating a buzz at the college around reading and writing. We have held various events such as inviting poet Dr Mike Garry to lead sessions with staff and students on the importance of literacy for life.

‘’We have also had the pleasure of hosting creative writing workshops with students from UCLan delivering sessions for our FE students. We also have poems found by UCLan students printed and shared across the whole campus at Preston, all related to the vocational subjects our learners study here.

‘’One of the most exciting aspects of this project is that we are going to be creating an anthology of creative written work into a book which will be published and will be available for purchase. The Creative Writing Competition is being advertised across all campuses. The top 3 pieces will receive an Amazon voucher as well as being published in the book - all entries are inspired by Myerscough College in some way, making this a book about Myerscough by Myerscough.

‘’Students have engaged well with the project and we are getting some really positive feedback about creative writing- many staff and students have entered the writing competition already so far, and we are looking forward to reading them all and producing our first book of collective works.’’

The deadline for entries is 4th April. They can be emailed to rnewton@myerscough.ac.uk or be submitted via the box in the library at Preston Campus.
