Myerscough student wins prestigious agriculture accolade

Rachael Jolly has been named Myerscough Agriculture Student of the Year by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society.

The Yorkshire Agricultural Society annually recognizes top land-based and agricultural students from colleges and universities across the north of England. These prestigious student awards are presented each July to highlight the next generation of talent entering the farming industry.

Rachael is a final year Level 3 student and was presented with his award at last week’s Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate.

Programme Leader and agriculture tutor, Liz Johnson said: ‘’Rachael has consistently produced assessment work to a high standard. She has been an excellent student throughout her studies, demonstrating a strong work ethic, a positive attitude, and a commitment to achieving her goals.

‘’She is self-motivated, always tries her best, and approaches all aspects of her work with confidence and determination.''

‘’Alongside her studies, Rachael plays an active role on her family dairy farm, where she is involved in milking, calf rearing, and a range of general farm duties. She has developed a strong understanding of livestock management and plans to take on full responsibility for calf rearing once she has completed her course.

‘’Rachael was also actively involved in the researching and designing of the farms’ new calf building.

‘’Rachael is also heavily involved in her local community. After successfully completing her Duke of Edinburgh Award, she became a Young Leader within her local Rainbows and Guides unit and is currently training to become a leader.

‘’In addition, she is an active member of Bilsborrow Young Farmers Club, where she serves as a programme leader, helping to organise and plan evening meetings and activities.

‘’In her spare time, Rachael also enjoys working on her allotment plot, where she grows flowers and vegetables. This interest began during the COVID-19 and has developed into a rewarding hobby that reflects her enthusiasm for anything outdoors and land-based.

‘’Overall, Rachael is a highly capable, reliable, and enthusiastic young person who is an asset to both the agricultural industry and her local community. She has shown maturity, dedication, and a willingness to take on responsibility, and I have no doubt that she will continue to be successful in her future endeavours.
