‘Elevate Leadership’ is a managerial training programme, operating in partnership between Myerscough College and Turf Business magazine, designed for those working in the turfcare industry transitioning in a managerial role and looking to advance their skillset and build a solid foundation for career progression.

Starting in September 2025, Elevate Leadership covers essential management fundamentals, filling a crucial gap for learners advancing from a Level 3 programme, or those beginning a management role.

This week marked a significant milestone for the industry as the first cohort of Elevate Leadership completed their programme.

Paul McGrail, Executive Director & Assistant Principal – Apprenticeships, Skills & Employer Engagement at Myerscough College, said: “The programme, is a vital step toward closing the leadership gap in the sports turf sector.

‘’The success of Elevate is not just about the learners who have completed the programme; it is a testament to what can be achieved when organisations come together with a shared vision to address critical industry skills needs.

‘’This truly unique collaboration was brought to the industry by Turf Business, delivered by Myerscough College, sponsored by John Deere, and certificated by Lantra. Together, we have created a programme that addresses a long-standing gap in management and leadership development within the sector.

‘’For many years, the industry has had strong technical qualifications available at Level 3 and advanced programmes at Level 5 and beyond. However, there has been a noticeable gap for individuals transitioning from technical and operational roles into management positions for the first time.

‘’Elevate was developed specifically to bridge that gap, providing new and aspiring managers with the practical leadership, communication, people management, and business skills needed to succeed in their roles. This programme is much more than a qualification. It is an investment in people, careers, organisations, and ultimately the future leadership of our industry.

‘’A huge thank you must go to Chris Meacock and John Deere for recognising the importance of management development and providing sponsorship that helped turn the vision into reality. Your commitment to supporting education and skills development within the sector has been instrumental in the programme's success.''

‘’My thanks also go to Turf Business for working so closely with Myerscough College to bring this concept to market. Their understanding of industry needs and commitment to professional development has ensured that Elevate delivers real value for employers and learners alike.

‘’I would also like to thank Lantra for their support in the design, certification and quality assurance of the award. Their expertise has helped ensure that the programme meets the highest standards while remaining relevant and practical for today's industry professionals.

‘’Special recognition must be given to Phil Helmn, whose passion, commitment and drive have been the catalyst behind this qualification. Phil has been a relentless advocate for developing the next generation of industry leaders, and this achievement is in no small part due to his determination and vision.’’

With 82% of UK managers lacking formal training and poor management contributing to nearly a third of employee turnover, Elevate equips future leaders with the skills, confidence, and support they need to thrive.

Approximately 28% of employees have left a company due to poor relationships with their managers.

Elevate Leadership aims to address these training needs, working towards improving staff retention, increasing job satisfaction, and upskilling industry professionals. Modules will cover leadership styles, communication, conflict resolution, project management and appraisals, alongside other essential management skills.

The programme is LANTRA accredited, ensuring that all participants are awarded with an industry standard qualification alongside their training.

The programme consists of 10 modules delivered through an online learning platform, with two days of in person learning to be held at the John Deere Training Academy. The programme is led by a leading industry trainer.

‘’Finally, and most importantly, congratulations to our graduates,’’ Paul adds.

‘’In my 27 years in education, I have seen many talented groups of learners progress through development programmes, and the graduates of this inaugural Elevate cohort stand out as an exceptional group of professionals.

‘’What has been especially rewarding to witness is the strong network that has developed between the cohort. Leadership can sometimes be a lonely journey, but I have no doubt that the friendships, professional connections and mutual support established during Elevate will endure long after graduation.

‘’These individuals will continue to learn from one another, challenge one another and support one another throughout their careers.

‘’As they return to their organisations equipped with new skills, greater confidence and a broader perspective, I am excited to see the positive impact they will have on their teams and the wider industry.’’

A spokesperson for Turf Business said: ‘’We have been working behind the scenes for a number of years to bring the industry a managerial training programme, with the absence of one being brought up across numerous Turf Business summits.

‘’For these reasons, Turf Business is delighted to have launched Elevate Leadership with the help of the programmes supporting partners, who share the aim of improving the training provided to the turfcare industry.’’
