Thomas Boyle has been named as a finalist in the prestigious annual RailStaff Awards for 2025, in the Apprentice of the Year category.

19-year-old Thomas recently completed a Level 3 Rail Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Standard programme with Myerscough, while working for Northern Trains.

The award category is intended to recognise the outstanding contributions of individuals new to the rail industry who have gained early and exceptional professional or civic achievements.

Thomas decided to pursue a career in rail engineering due to his passion for the railway sector and electrical engineering and came straight from school into his apprenticeship at Northern Trains Ltd.

Throughout his three-year apprenticeship, Thomas's dedication has been evident in the high-quality standard of work that he consistently submits, receiving nothing but positive feedback. He faces new tasks with an initiative-taking approach and strives to develop himself every day. Not only is Thomas committed to his work he is keen to help others.

He regularly works alongside new apprentices and new starters when completing tasks to offer advice and guidance wherever possible. Thomas has volunteered at new apprentice interview assessment days, welcome days and at job and career events. He is keen to engage people and promote engineering in the railway industry as an attractive career opportunity for people from all backgrounds and experience levels.

When Thomas is not at work, he demonstrates the engineering knowledge he's gained to build gaming PCs and develop video games. He can often be found in Scotland following his beloved Glasgow Rangers FC or showing discipline in his local gym and at Karate, in which he holds a black belt.

Thomas is a shining example to all what can be achieved with hard work and dedication and he has a fantastic career ahead of him.

The RailStaff Awards will be held at the end of the month at the NEC, Birmingham.
