Myerscough College launches sector leading apprenticeship in cricket coaching
Published: Wednesday 27 August 2025Myerscough College and the Lancashire Cricket Foundation have teamed up to offer the first ever apprenticeship of its kind in cricket coaching in the country.

Myerscough’s cricket provision, based at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester, has been recognised as being among the market leaders in the sector for a number of years, and now this latest innovation will further enhance and develop the sport across the county and beyond.
In conjunction with the Lancashire Cricket Foundation (LCF), this exciting new partnership will see an initial intake of learners enrol onto a Level 4 Sports Coaching apprenticeship, with the programme set to begin in October.
This new initiative will provide five aspiring coaches with the opportunity to gain high-level, industry-recognised qualifications over the next 15 months, helping to shape the next generation of sports coaching professionals.
The apprenticeship combines academic learning with practical, real-world coaching experience, equipping participants with the tools and confidence to thrive in the sporting industry, and directly supports the strategic aims of Lancashire Cricket Foundation, to build a diverse and dynamic coaching workforce reflective of the communities it serves.
It also reinforces Myerscough College’s position as a leading provider of sports education and training, known for delivering quality programmes that support career progression and personal development.
Managing Director of Lancashire Cricket Foundation, Jen Barden, said: ‘’This is the next step in shaping the next generation of cricket coaches, and will provide young people with hands-on experience and professional development in the cricketing world.
‘’I’m excited for the coming months, as we look to offer more apprenticeship opportunities, develop a robust and enhanced training programme and work with the workforce of the future across the county.’’
Andy Massey leads the cricket studies provision at Myerscough College.
He added: ‘’This new apprenticeship is structured to offer participants a understanding of cricket coaching, sports development, and the operations of a professional cricket organization.
‘’The first cohort will gain valuable insights into the daily workings of the Lancashire Cricket Foundation, including involvement in community outreach programmes, event management, and grassroots cricket development.
‘’Our centre at Emirates Old Trafford continues to thrive, with dozens of students completing Level 3 programmes every year, many of whom go on to superb careers within the sports industry across a range of positions.
‘’Cricket is a key sport for the county of Lancashire and the wider North West, and I look forward to watching the learners grow as they proceed along their apprenticeship journey”.
Amelia Sammons is one of the new cohort who can’t wait to get started.
"As a student at Myerscough College, I feel really proud to be starting the next steps in my education and career in cricket through the apprenticeship,’’ she said.
‘’Having the chance to progress from my Level 3 BTEC studies is such a unique opportunity and I cannot wait to start in October. It means I can keep developing personal and coaching my skills while gaining real experience in community cricket, and I know that what I’m learning will help me build a career in the sport I love.
‘’To be part of something that supports the future of cricket across Lancashire makes it even more special."
The Lancashire Cricket Foundation works across the North West to develop and deliver a range of projects, programmes and events designed to engage, excite, inspire and improve individuals and communities through cricket.
Established as the official charity of Lancashire Cricket, the Lancashire Cricket Foundation aims to make a positive difference to the lives of individuals and communities in order to grow the appeal of the game at all levels.
