Importance of Uniformed Protected Services highlighted as part of Armistice Day commemorations
Published: Tuesday 11 November 2025Myerscough College has held a special event to mark Armistice Day and the important role played by people in the uniformed protected services sector.
'Myerscough Remembers’ at the College’s main Bilsborrow campus invited Myerscough students, guests and a number of Year 9 and 10 pupils from local secondary schools, to participate in a special morning dedicated to the meaning of the day, and a focus on the importance of Uniformed Protected Services.
The morning featured a talk on the importance of Remembrance, with a focus on Myerscough College links to and our role during the World Wars, before a poignant reading of John McCrae’s ‘In Flanders Fields’ by foundation learning student Steven Whittle.
There then followed the traditional playing of the Last Post, followed by the observing of a two-minute silence and Reveille.
School students and representative from Myerscough’s Principalship then laid wreaths on a steel Cenotaph that Myerscough engineering students constructed especially for the occasion.
All students attending were encouraged to take a ‘paper poppy’, write on it what Remembrance means to them or who they are remembering, then add it to a glass wall in the sports hall, where the ceremony was held.

Myerscough UPS staff and current students on such programmes also used the day to facilitate Remembrance learning activities, a talk on the range of career opportunities available in the UPS sector, and an interactive activity with UPS students and staff, showcasing the study options available in the subject area for school leavers.
