The two-week trip to the South Pacific island country provided an incredible journey of cultural exchange, teamwork, and personal growth for all who were fortunate enough to be on the plane.

A group of 22 Myerscough students and staff were on the trip, where they delivered sports coaching sessions to children and young people in rural communities.

They undertook a series of organisational field trips and worked with local communities to inspire youth through physical activity, leadership, and collaboration.

They embraced Fijian culture, developed new skills, and made lasting memories while contributing to impactful aims that benefit local people.

The trip, organised in collaboration with Think Pacific, forms part of the college’s commitment to global engagement and hands-on learning. Fiji’s vibrant culture, diverse population, and breathtaking landscapes made the perfect backdrop for this sports project.

Beyond coaching, the students immersed themselves in Fijian culture—participating in traditional ceremonies, learning the local language, and contributing to cultural projects. The experience broadened their global outlook and deepened their understanding of sport as a tool for education and social development.

Myerscough’s Dr John Fry was trip leader, and said: “This was once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our students to apply their knowledge in a meaningful way, and make memories that will stay with them for the rest of their lives – experiencing wonderful people, culture, traditions, and dance.''

“The warmth and friendliness of Fijian community in the villages has had a huge impact on all students, the happiness across the faces of all local children was truly infectious.

‘’It’s clear these experiences have expanded students’ views of the world has in many ways”

Situated in the south pacific, Fiji consists of over 330 islands, with 110 permanently inhabited, where students visited locations such as Nadi, the Coral Coast, Daku, and the capital Suva.
