Beekeeping for Beginners (Croxteth)

About the course

Introduction: This is an introduction to people who are interested in establishing a hive of their own or who are interested in keeping bees. What are the entry requirements? A keen interest in beekeeping. How long is the course? One weekend (Saturday and Sunday) What will the course involve? This short course will enable you to gain the practical skills and background knowledge required to establish and maintain a colony of honey bees. The course includes: · An understanding of life within the hive · An examination and description of hive and beekeeping equipment. · An understanding of the time, cost and commitment required. · Bee identification. · Bee pests and diseases. · Swarm management. During the course students will observe and examine a working colony of bees. Whilst every effort will be made to protect attendees from bee stings, if you have ever suffered an adverse reaction to insect stings please seek medical advice before joining the course. How long will I be learning? Although this course only lasts for one weekend, this is only the start and you’ll carry on learning as you put your new skills into practice. What equipment will I need? All equipment is provided, but you will need to wear sensible footwear and outdoor clothing. How will I know if I am making progress? Demonstration of new skills. What course work will I be expected to complete? Practical skills during the course. What other training programmes and progression opportunities are there? There are further courses offered relating to the subject, including Beekeeping Products (the production of lip balm, hand balm, candles etc) and Planting for Pollination.
