Pi Day is celebrated on March 14 around the world, and centres around the Greek letter Pi (π), the symbol used in mathematics to represent the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159.

Pi Day is an annual opportunity for maths enthusiasts to recall Pi trivia, memorise some of the infinite digits of Pi, talk to their friends about maths, and maybe more importantly, eat pie, for which Myerscough’s catering team generously laid in some special Pi themed pies for the occasion.

Maths is embedded right into the heart of teaching at Myerscough College and University, across all subject areas across the land-based, sport, science and engineering industries, from 14-16 programmes, to functional skills for further education learners and right through to degree level programmes.

Furthermore, as a STEM Assured College - Pi Day is a great way to celebrate enjoyment of maths in a fun way.

To achieve the STEM Assured status, education providers are assessed against a robust framework that benchmarks their capability to design and deliver STEM courses that keep pace with emerging technology and the evolving needs of employers, of which maths is a key feature.

Achieving the STEM Assured Award means that Myerscough can demonstrate a number of key benchmarks, including that provision is consistently of a high quality, and is aligned with current and anticipated industry workforce requirements for knowledge, skills and competencies.

Steve Jones, Senior Lecturer in Mathematics at Myerscough, organised Pi Day and said: ‘’Maths is a keystone subject in preparing our students for a working life in the highly scientific and technical land -based sector.

‘’All of our students will be studying maths as part of their vocational learning, or as a stand alone subject. Pi Day is a chance to proudly celebrate maths and raise the profile of maths within our college.’’
