About the course

Myerscough College has teamed up with Manchester Thunder Netball to offer a fantastic opportunity to students wishing to pursue a career within the netball and sports industry. The Myerscough College Netball combines academic sporting qualifications with practical skills development, coaching and competitive fixtures.

Students receive high quality coaching throughout the week - from both a team and individual perspective. It is supported by qualified tutors and highly experienced coaches. Myerscough Netball offers the high quality netball coaching and development available in the UK for players aged 16 and over, as well as competitive netball in the AoC College Sport system.

Myerscough College is superbly equipped for the teaching of netball, with many great resources at the Bilsborrow centre in Preston and additional regional training and coaching venues. What Myerscough Netball can offer:

The College offers the opportunity to study at level 3 (A level equivalent) for students who wish to develop a comprehensive understanding of Sport and Exercise Sciences and Netball - encompassing practical techniques, academic knowledge and technical skills. It is a popular option for both school leavers and successful Level 2 Diploma students. The course incorporates a mix of practicals, classroom lectures, industry visits and case study exercises.

Extended Diploma

Fitness Testing - Optional

Learners will gain an understanding of fitness testing and the importance of health screening and health monitoring tests

Sport Development

Learners will explore the principles of sport development, the key agencies involved and provide practical examples of current practice.

Self-Employment in Sport and Physical Activity

Learners will develop knowledge and understanding of self-employment and apply this to develop a self-employment strategy within the context of the sport industry.

Nutrition for Physical Performance - Optional

Learners will explore the importance of nutrition and hydration within a sport context.

Sporting Injuries - Optional

Learners will develop the skills needed to identify common sporting injuries, their potential causes and how they can be managed with different rehabilitation interventions and exercises.

Sports Psychology - Optional

Learners will develop an understanding of the psychological demands of sport and develop techniques to improve sporting performance.

Applied Coaching Skills

Learners will develop a coaching programme to improve performance at all levels and for multi-sports.

Research Project in Sport

Learners propose and undertake research within a sport context

Learners will explore the importance of physical activity and wellbeing for different types of participants and suggest ways to improve their physical and mental health status.

Entry requirements & additional information

Entry requirements

These courses give a good technical training and education providing a vocational alternative to A Levels and the opportunity for successful students to progress to Higher Education. Students are normally aged 16 or over and the following requirements are needed:

Advanced Level 3 Suite:

BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate (360) - (1 year)

An English GCSE at C (4) or higher plus a minimum of three others at C (4) or higher, including Maths or Science.

BTEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma (540) – (1 year)

An English GCSE at C (4) or higher plus a minimum of four others at C (4) or higher, including Maths and Science.

BTEC Level 3 Diploma (720) – (2 year)

An English GCSE at C (4) or higher plus a minimum of three others at C (4) or higher, including Maths or Science.

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (1080) - (2 year)

An English GCSE at C (4) or higher plus a minimum of four others at C (4) or higher, including Maths and Science.

In addition Learning Areas may apply specific agreed aptitude assessments that assist selection.

Learning and assessment

Assessments will include assignments, presentations and reports. There are no formal examinations on the Level 3 BTEC Diploma.

Progression

As a course equivalent to A Level the Level 3 BTEC Diploma is an ideal spring board for progression to a Foundation Degree or Full Degree depending on UCAS points gained. Successful students may progress to higher education courses such as:

  • FdSc Sport Coaching and Performance
  • FdSc Strength and Conditioning
  • FdSc Sports Coaching
  • A range of BA and BSc undergraduate degrees

These Foundation courses require a minimum of 48 plus UCAS points dependant on entry criteria for each individual university establishment.

Careers

Employment opportunities in Sport & Exercise Science and its related industries are currently very good. The Extended Certificate, Foundation Diploma, Diploma and Extended Diploma Netball provide the qualification and experience for entry into the industry at an operational level with future prospects for management.

Special requirements

Costs that are optional for the course:

  • Optional netball tours across the country and abroad to compete - £350 approx
  • Some optional additional qualifications - £150 approx
  • Clothing - £100 approx

Work experience

Students will be encouraged to find work within the industry to support their studies.
