As National Apprenticeship Week arrives, we took our Chief Executive and Principal out to experience a day in the life of a golf greenkeeping apprentice.

Alison Robinson paid a visit to see Jordan Murphy at Longridge Golf Club. Jordan is part way through his Golf Greenkeeping apprenticeship and works under the direction of Course Manager, Andrew Read, who himself started his working life as an apprentice.

Alison said: “We are really proud of our apprentices and their employers and it’s fantastic to experience first-hand the hard work and dedication teams put into their roles.  I have seen the course and its facilities and had a go at some of the tasks Jordan undertakes on a daily basis, although I am not sure my bunker raking was up to industry standard!”

“Apprenticeships are currently in a major transition as we move from frameworks to standards with a focus on skills, knowledge and behaviours and also to end point assessment. Myerscough College are fully behind the reforms and actively looking to engage with new employers and apprentices. I would like to thank Andrew and the team for allowing me the chance to visit.”

Course Manager at Longridge Golf Club, Andrew Read said: “For me apprenticeships are a great opportunity for those taking their first steps into a career. You can gain relevant, up to date industry qualifications and earn a salary at the same time. As an employer you can also benefit from new enthusiastic staff who are motivated to learn and progress.

‘’You also have the chance to play a part in training the next generation of workforce in your business. So far Jordan is progressing well in his course and it’s fantastic that Alison has taken time to come along today to experience first-hand the role. “

Jordan explained his reasons for choosing an apprenticeship and what he loves about his role: “I love working outdoors and being part of a team. My job is really varied, and no two days are the same. We sometimes can suffer with the weather, but everyone gets stuck in to get the job done.

‘’I have so far learned many new skills on the programme, and it’s great to get compliments from members on the quality and playability of the course. I am looking forward to achieving my apprenticeship and then progressing in my role here at Longridge Golf Club.”
