Myerscough College recently welcomed Steph Holmes from Chrysalis Transsexual Support for two informative sessions about Trans Awareness for students and staff.

Steph runs five support groups across the North West for trans awareness and has many voluntary roles involving trans awareness, including with the NHS and Lancashire Constabulary. In 2017 she won the Hate Crime Champion Award at the Bolton Diversity Awards.

During the talks, Steph shared her own personal story about trans and covered several important issues including the rights and responsibilities of young people, the language people use and legal details about changing names.

Staff and students from the College were extremely responsive to the talks and Steph was delighted with the positive and receptive atmosphere.

She said: “Myerscough College is one of the most welcoming College’s I’ve ever been to with a superb ethos when it comes to equality, diversity and inclusion.

“The students and staff who attended the talks were all very receptive to the message and open to learning more about the issues around trans awareness.’’

Karen Livesey, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Officer for the College, said: “Trans awareness is obviously a very important issue for our students and staff and we were fortunate to be able to have Steph in to share her experiences.

“Many of our students and staff commented on how honest and open Steph’s personal testimony was and how shocking it was to learn of the suicide rates of Trans young people. They left the sessions feeling that they now had a deeper understanding of the issues and are keen to learn more about them.”

Steph will return to Myerscough College in September for another session for staff and students, including a session for 14-16 students.
