Wood Turning - Weekend Course

About the course

This beginner’s level course in woodturning, has been developed to take students with little or no experience in woodturning to astage where they can safely design and manufacture projects on a small woodturning lathe. Over the weekend you will be instructed and shown how to safely operate the lathe and to produce a number of projects, each with a different degree of difficulty as you progress through the course. All the projects pieces made can be taken home at the end of the course with no additional charge. The material costs are included within the course fee. At the end of the course, students should have gained sufficient knowledge to competently and safely set up their own workshop and tools at home. In doing so students can produce products for their own use or for resale as required.

  • Woodturning tool techniques
  • Wood appreciation
  • Work holding methods
  • Sanding techniques
  • Finishing techniques


  • Essential woodturning shape elements (Test piece - 'bumpy shiny stick')
  • Platter
  • Lidded box
  • Pen (if time, depending on progress)

Items listed may be altered without notice depending on availability of materials.

All tools, materials and tuition will be provided by WOOD AND STUFF LTD at their specialist training workshop in Lytham. The material costs are included within the course fee.

Students are expected to wear suitable clothing (not loose fitting) or a specialist apron, suitable footwear (not canvas or open-toed). Loose fitting jewellery to be removed. Long hair should be tied back.

Course handouts and project sheets will be provided as the course progresses.

Food is not provided - please bring a packed lunch if required, or there is a McDonalds and Lidl store within walking distance of the venue. Coffee, tea and water will be provided.
