About the course

This course is designed for students who wish to develop an overview of the Horticulture, Landscape and Sportsturf industries. It will prepare you for a range of careers in practical employment positions, alternatively it provides an ideal progression route to further and higher education.

The College offers opportunity to study at level 3 (A level equivalent) for students who wish to develop a comprehensive understanding of Horticulture, Landscape or Sportsturf encompassing practical techniques, academic knowledge and technical skills. It is a popular option for both school leavers and successful Level 2 Diploma students. The course incorporates a mix of practicals, classroom lectures, industry visits and case study exercises. Students enjoy the wide variety of theory and practical subjects combined with a range of projects and assessments.

Students will also receive training and assessment in a range of additional qualifications, which will enhance their employability.

During the course students will gain a combination of both academic knowledge and practical skills such as the identification, production and maintenance of plants, construction and maintenance of hard landscape features such as block paving and flagging and the maintenance of turf areas for a variety of situations. You will gain skills in using and maintaining land based machinery such as mowers, rotavators and compact tractors.

Undertake an Investigative Project in the Land-based Sector

This module aims to provide you with an understanding of the principles of undertaking an investigative project and how this can be put into practice.

Entry requirements & additional information

Entry requirements

Advanced Level 3 Suite:

City and Guilds Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma – (60 credits in 1 year)

4 GCSEs including English Language at Grade C or above, or a Level 2 qualification (eg First Diploma at Merit level including at least 1 key skill or functional skills at level 2 in either Application of Number or Communication) or equivalent qualifications.

City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma – (120 credits in 2 year)

4 GCSEs at Grade C or above including English Language and Maths or Science or a Level 2 qualification (eg First Diploma at Merit level including at least 1 key skill or functional skills at level 2 in either Application of Number or Communication) or equivalent qualifications.

Applicants for all courses in Horticulture, Landscape and Sportsturf studies are expected to show a strong commitment to the industry and a strong personal statement. Candidates must be willing to work outdoors in all weathers, work as part of a team on practical and theory tasks, work on physically demanding tasks and have a passion for at least one of the industries listed.

Learning and assessment

Assessments will include assignments, exams, presentations and reports.

Progression

As a course equivalent to A Level the Level 3 City and Guilds Subsidiary Diploma is an ideal spring board for progression to a Diploma. The Diploma will allow a student to gain UCAS points to progress onto a Higher Education Course, eg:

Careers

Employment opportunities in the Horticulture, Landscape and Sportsturf industries are currently very good. The Level 3 Diploma course provides the qualifications and experience for entry into the industry at an operational level with future prospects for management.

Sportsturf studies

There are fantastic opportunities both in the UK and overseas for people who are trained and qualified in sportsturf. Careers exist at all levels, from assistant groundspersons and greenkeepers to managers of international sports facilities such as Premier League Football Clubs and the major elite Golf Courses. Our courses will equip you with the skills that are necessary to build, maintain and manage quality turf surfaces to a high standard.

Students learn the science behind how grasses grow, as well as soils, drainage and a wide range of maintenance practices. You will gain an understanding of the demands of sport and what players need or expect from turf surfaces. You will be taught how to provide these conditions all year round and in all weather conditions.
