About the course

The supervisory management qualification covers all aspects of learning to support career and management development for those working as a groundsman, and wishing to progress within the industry. Please see factsheet for more information on the course.

Combined Competence and Knowledge Qualification

Promote, monitor and maintain health, safety and security of the workplace

Estimate and programme resource requirements

Manage your own resources

Set out and mark out landscape sites to establish grassed and planted areas

Evaluate ground and environmental conditions to establish grassed and planted areas

Prepare sites for soft landscape establishment

Establish grass swards

Plan the maintenance, repair and renovation of sports turf areas

Plan and set out sports areas

Maintain drainage systems

Maintain irrigation systems

Manage information for actions

Establish planted areas

Prepare sites for landscape works

Design and install drainage

Prepare for and maintain equipment and machines

Plan and manage the control of pests, diseases and disorders

Safe use and application of pesticides

First Aid Certificate

1 Legislative course e.g. PA1,Cylinder & Rotary Mowers, Manual Handling, Abrasive Wheels

Entry requirements & additional information

Entry requirements

Entry onto the apprenticeship is subject to a thorough initial assessment to clarify course appropriateness. Entrants must have the ability to achieve Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Mathematics and be able to cope with the Level 3 vocational qualification. Apprentices must have a contract of employment working for a minimum for 30 hours/week.


Apprentices successfully completing the Advanced Apprenticeship have opportunities to progress within the industry by continuing onto into Higher Education.


Typical jobs apprentices will be able to progress onto on completion of the advanced apprenticeship will depend on the qualifications and experience gained, but could include a range of roles within Sportsturf industry.
