About the course

During this study programme, students will gain practical experience in Public Services, enabling them to develop a substantial common core of knowledge, including Government policies, leadership and teamwork, and citizenship and diversity as well as specific mandatory units related to your career pathway, such as understanding discipline, fitness testing and training, responding to emergency situations, outdoor and adventurous activities and volunteering in public services, thus helping people to become occupationally ready to take up employment in the public services sector at the appropriate level. This can follow either directly after achieving the qualification, or via the stepping stone of Higher Education (HE) in university or college.

By studying a Public Services Level 3 course learners develop knowledge, understanding and skills required by the sector, including essential employability skills, and allowing them to be applied in real work contexts.

Entry requirements & additional information

Entry requirements

Level 3 BTEC Subsidiary Diploma - (60 credits in 1 year)

4 GCSEs including English Language at Grade C or above, or a Level 2 qualification (eg First Diploma at Pass level including at least 1 key skill at level 2 in either Application of Number or Communication), or equivalent qualifications.

Level 3 BTEC Diploma - (120 credits in 2 years)

4 GCSEs at Grade C or above, including at least 1 in English Language and Maths or Science or a Level 2 qualification (eg First Diploma at Merit level including at least 1 key skill at level 2 in either Application of Number or Communication), or equivalent qualifications.

Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma - (180 credits in 2 years) (year 1 is a 90 credit stand-alone Diploma)

5 GCSEs at Grade C or above including Maths and English Language and Science or equivalent qualifications.

In addition Learning Areas may apply specific agreed aptitude assessments that assist selection.

Applicants for all courses in Public Services are expected to show a strong commitment to the industry and a strong personal statement.

Learning and assessment

This study programme is pracitcal and will involve external visits, workshops and outdoor activities as well as underpinnign classroom theory sessions.

Assessments will include assignments, presentations and reports. There are no formal examinations on the Level 3 BTEC Diploma.

Progression

As a course equivalent to A Level the Level 3 BTEC Diploma is an ideal spring board for progression to a Foundation Degree or Full Degree depending on UCAS points gained.
