About the course

Course Overview

With approximately 15% of people being affected by Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLDs), it is important for individuals to develop their understanding of what SpLDs are and how they can affect the lives of those impacted by them. From dyslexia and dyscalculia to ADHD and DCD, there are many types of SpLD and some people are affected by more than one. This course will help to identify ways of supporting individuals with dyslexia and other SpLDs.

By completing the course, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of dyslexia and other Specific Learning Difficulties. The units and topics included are ideal for learners who are looking to support individuals with SpLDs in any environment, be it at home, in the workplace, or in schools.

Who will Benefit from the Course

This course is ideal for learners who wish to develop their knowledge and understanding of Specific Learning Difficulties. This could include teaching staff that wish to further their understanding of dyslexia, ADHD and other Specific Learning Difficulties, as well as employers who are looking for ways to support their workforce. This course is suitable for learners aged 16 or above.

Learning Method

Studying via distance learning means you can choose when and where you study as long as you meet the identified unit deadlines.

This Course is Available:

The course is 100% online and on demand. Each unit has a deadline but learners can complete the programme at any time before this deadline at a time that fits around existing commitments. Learners must have access to a laptop, computer or tablet (phones cannot be used) and have internet access. .

What you will Learn

This course is split into five manageable units:

Unit 1: Understand Specific Learning Difficulties

In this unit you will gain an understanding of what is meant by the term ‘Specific Learning Difficulty’. You will research the characteristics of different difficulties and co-occurring conditions. You will also gain an understanding of common misconceptions and how the difficulty is a lifelong condition.

Unit 2: Understand the effects of Specific Learning Difficulties

Throughout this unit you will gain an understanding of how Specific Learning Difficulties affect an individual’s life and those of others around them. You will gain an understanding of how the attitudes of others can impact the individuals and on completion of the unit will be able to identify the strengths and barriers an individual may experience.

Unit 3: Understand the diagnosis of Specific Learning Difficulties

In this unit you will gain an understanding of the importance of gaining an early diagnosis and the impact of delayed or non-diagnosis. You will also investigate the diagnosis process and the professionals involved.

Unit 4: Understanding supporting individuals with Specific Learning Difficulties

This unit will explain how to support an individual with a Specific Learning Difficulty in a variety of settings. You will gain an understanding of different coping strategies and assistive technology that can be used as support.

Unit 5: Understand the context of Specific Learning Difficulties

Within this unit you will gain an understanding of how attitudes, legislation and services have evolved over time to support individuals with Specific Learning Difficulties.

Fees

  • The course fees for this course is £249.
  • Students may be eligible for a fully funded place. Forms will be provided to assess this after application but as a guide students must be:

* Eligible to live and work in the UK

*Unemployed and in receipt of benefits (this will usually be universal credit- please note carers allowance cannot be used as evidence towards funding )

OR

*Earning below £19 305 (Liverpool City Region residents) OR £17 004 (please contact us if you live an another devolved authority)

To confirm eligibility we will need evidence in the form of pay slips or benefits statements

Entry Criteria

Learners are expected to be IT literate

All applicants will be asked to take an online English assessment prior to enrolment.

Learners should be able to commit sufficient time to complete the course. it will take people differing amounts of time to complete this course however the published course hours are 120.
