Course Overview

Do you have an interest in Horticulture, Sport, Machinery and the Great Outdoors? Would you like to start a new career working in the Sportsturf industry, either on golf course or in sports stadia?

Are you looking to change your career or improve your progression opportunities, by gaining professional qualifications and developing your knowledge and practical expertise in the land-based sector? Our Adult Skills courses are designed to appeal to all ages and abilities, no matter what your current experience or skillset

There are no formal entry requirements other than an interest in the subject area

What will the course involve?


The qualification will prepare individuals to progress into the land-based sector by developing their specific knowledge, skills and understanding; preparing them for employment and offering support to a specific industry.

Health & Safety:

Understand health and safety risks arising from work activities within the Grounds maintenance industry; understand matters affecting health and safety; understand and maintain safe plant and equipment; ensure safe handling and use of substances; understand H&S information and instruction; ensure competency to carry out tasks; understand and maintain safe and healthy working conditions.

Practical Horticultural Skills:

Focussing upon the fundamental practical skills in horticulture, you will learn skills such as planting out, preparing ground, pruning, using a mower, maintaining turf or constructing a path.

Safe Use of Ride On Mowers

This includes pre-use checks, maintenance, identification of controls and instruments, and operating the machine, taking in to account the type of cutting mechanism used.

How long will I be learning?

Location: Preston

Course Length: 1 Week

Start Dates:

· Monday 29th April 2019 – Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm

· Monday 13th May 2019 - Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm

What equipment will I need?

Sensible outdoor clothing is required for practical work.

Steel toe capped boots/Wellingtons are essential.

During this 1 week programme, you will achieve the following:

· Award in Practical Horticulture Skills

· Level 1 Award in Employability Skills

· Level 2 Award in Health & Safety

· Level 2 Award in Safe Use of Ride on Mowers
