Introduction to Italian

About the course

On this introduction to the Italian language and culture course you will develop linguistic competence and cultural knowledge that will make you confident with basic interactions when travelling around Italy. The sessions will be student-oriented and based on activities that cover speaking, listening, reading and writing through fun and immersive tasks.

Me and you

Week 1: Greetings and presentation

You will learn to introduce yourself when meeting locals. At the end of the session, you will be able to interact in a basic conversation and deal with names, your place of origin, nationality and personal information.

Week 2: Talking about family, job, place of residency, preferences

You will soon discover that people will appreciate the fact that you can speak a little bit of Italian and they will want to know more about you. We will, therefore, spend another session concentrating on social interactions and describing who you are. We will learn how to describe family, talk about age, jobs and what you like to do in life.

Week 3: At the market

During this session you will learn to identify shops and products, how to describe and buy food. Of course, you will also get a few tips about what you should not miss at an Italian market.

Week 4: Bar and restaurant

During this session you will learn about the coffee culture in Italy, how to book a table, read an Italian menu, ask for explanations, order food, ask for the bill… and pay.

In the city

Week 5: Shopping

You will describe a city and identify the different buildings and shops. You will learn colours and items you may find in a shop and by the end of the lesson you will be able to buy your souvenirs from Italy or the latest fashionable item and perhaps grab a bargain… all in Italian.

Week 6: Asking for directions

Forget your GPS, travelling is about interacting with different people, not the usual machine! During this session you will learn how to ask for directions and understand an itinerary.

Staying and leaving

Week 7: At the hotel

After such an exciting day, a good rest is welcome! You will learn how to book a hotel room, describe a room and facilities. You will also be able to talk about leisure, sports and how to chill out.

Week 8: At the station

It is now time to go to another city, either continue the holiday or go back home. During this session you will learn how to buy a train ticket, talk about time and timetables, destinations and, again, prices.
