Introduction to French

About the course

On this beginners French course you will develop skills cultural knowledge that will make you confident with basic interactions when travelling in a French speaking country. The sessions will be student-oriented, and based on activities that cover speaking, listening, reading and writing through fun and immersive tasks. Your holiday starts with this journey into French pour les vacances!

Me and you

Week 1 Greetings and presentation: You will learn to introduce yourself and identify others:

Travelling is about knowing places, but perhaps first about meeting locals. At the end of the session, you will be able to interact in a basic conversation, and deal with names, your place of origin, nationality and personal information.

Week 2 Talking about family, job, place of residency.

You will soon discover that people will appreciate the fact that you can speak a little bit of French, and they will want to know more about you. We will, therefore, spend another session concentrating on social interactions and describing who you are. We will learn how to describe a family, talk about age, jobs, and what you like to do in life.

Week 3 Au marché

No need to introduce the importance of food in France! During this session, you will learn to identify shops and products, how to describe and buy food. Of course, you will also get a few tips about what you should not miss on a French market.

Week 4 Au restaurant.

Honestly, if you want to try snails, booking a table in a good restaurant is a much wiser move than heading to the market. During this session, you will learn how to book a table, read a French menu, ask for explanations, order food, ask for the bill… and pay.

In the city

Week 5 Visite guidée

You will describe a city and identify the different buildings, shops, and transports. You will also organize your discovery of a French city, in order to make sure that you enjoy each moment of the day at its best.

Week 6 C’est par où?

Forget your GPS, travelling is about interacting with different people, not the usual machine! During this session, you will learn how to ask for directions, explain or understand an itinerary, and choose the best mean of transport for your needs.

Staying and leaving

Week 7 A l’hôtel.

After such an exciting day, a good rest is welcome! You will learn how to book a hotel room, describe a room and facilities. You will also be able to talk about leisure, sports and how to chill out in French.

Week 8 A la gare

It is now time to go to another city, either continue the holiday, or go back home. During this session, you will learn how to buy a train ticket, talk about hours, timetables, destinations and, again, prices. Au revoir!
