Intermediate Apprenticeship in Workbased Horticulture - Production

About the course

Venue

Work Based blended delivery programme consisting predominantly of on-site training and assessment within the workplace, supported by off-site technical training at local training and assessment venues as required. Course teaching, learning and assessment is enhanced through the effective use of e portfolio and distance learning resources to ensure flexible delivery is responsive to learner, employer and situational needs.

Programme Length

Work-based delivery over a minimum * of 20 months, dependent on initial assessment.

*Minimum durations apply for 16 – 18 year olds. 19 + learners can apply for accredited prior learning which may reduce the duration. Funding rules dictate a minimum of 12 months duration.

The Apprenticeship is made up of a number of different nationally recognised qualifications:

Combined Competence and Knowledge Qualification: ·

Level 2 Diploma in Work-based Horticulture - Production

(Minimum of 20 credits from optional units)

Functional Skills: ·

Level 1 English ·

Level 1 Mathematics

Employee Rights and Responsibilities ·

Delivered and assessed through a workbook

Personal Learning and Thinking Skills ·

Assessment and recognition through a Record of Achievement

Additional Employer Requirements: ·

First Aid Certificate · 1 Legislative Course e.g. PA1, PA6

Course modules

Monitoring and maintaining and safety

Maintain and develop personal performance

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others

Plant nomenclature, terminology and identification

Identify and report the presence of pests, diseases and disorders

Communicate information within the workplace

Preparing ground for seeding and planting

Establishing plants and or seeds in soil

Preparing and transporting plants and resources

Provide nutrients to crops or plants

Remove unwanted plant growth to maintain development

Carry out harvesting operations

Prepare and operate a tractor and attachments

Maintain equipment and machines

Monitor and record environmental conditions for protected crops

Monitor and maintain watering systems

Control pests, diseases and disorders

Identify and collect plants for dispatch

Prepare plants for dispatch

Entry requirements & additional information

Entry requirements

Entry onto the apprenticeship is subject to a thorough initial assessment to clarify course appropriateness. Entrants must have the ability to achieve Level 1 Functional Skills in English and Mathematics and be able to cope with the Level 2 vocational qualification. Apprentices must have a contract of employment working for a minimum for 30 hours/week.

Progression

Apprentices successfully completing the Intermediate Apprenticeship have opportunities to progress within the industry by continuing onto the Advanced Apprenticeship in Horticulture or other Further Education courses.

Careers

Typical jobs apprentices will be able to progress onto on completion of the Intermediate Apprenticeship will depend on the qualifications and experience gained, but could include: glasshouse worker, vegetable production, garden centre worker, bedding plant production.
