Intermediate Apprenticeship in Local Environmental Services

About the course

This programme covers a range of cleaning and environmental services skills and related practices. The objectives of the course are to ensure the development of practical skills, related background knowledge including health and safety issues and procedures.

Programme Length

Work-based delivery over a minimum * of 18 months, dependent on initial assessment.

*Minimum durations apply for 16 – 18 year olds. 19 + learners can apply for accredited prior learning which may reduce the duration. Funding rules dictate a minimum of 12 months duration.


Work-based blended delivery programme consisting predominantly of on-site training and assessment within the workplace, supported by off-site technical training at local training and assessment venues as required. Course teaching, learning and assessment is enhanced through the effective use of e portfolio and distance learning resources to ensure flexible delivery is responsive to learner, employer and situational needs.

Competence Qualification

Level 2 Certificate in Local Environmental Services

(Group B - minimum of 2 credits: Group C - minimum of 3 credits: Group D - minimum of 8 credits)

Level 2 Award in Cleaning Principles

Functional Skills

Level 1 English

Level 1 Mathematics

Group B -Work with others and follow reporting procedures

Group C - Perform street cleansing manually

Group C - Perform street cleaning mechanically

Group B -Work individually and follow reporting procedures

Group C - Clean and maintain external surfaces and areas

Group D - Levelling and preparing sites for landscaping

Group C - Deal with routine waste

Group D - Preparing ground for seeding and planting

Group D - Establishing plants and/or seeds in soil

Group D - Identify the health and maintain the condition of general amenity turf

Group D - Establish decorative amenity areas

Entry requirements & additional information

Entry requirements

Entry onto the apprenticeship is subject to a thorough initial assessment to clarify course appropriateness. Entrants must have the ability to achieve Level 1 Functional Skills in English and Mathematics and be able to cope with the Level 2 vocational qualification. Apprentices must have a contract of employment working for a minimum or 30 hours per week.


Apprentices successfully completing the Intermediate Apprenticeship have opportunities to progress within the industry by continueing onto the Advanced Apprenticeship in Facilities Management or other Further Education courses.


Typical jobs apprentices will be able to progress onto on completion of the Intermediate Apprenticeship will depend on the qualifications and experience gained.
