About the course

Brief Description of the Course:

This is a roll on / roll off course that is available to individuals and members of community groups across Liverpool City Region. This qualification consists of 12 units (totalling 37 credits), or ‘practical skills’. The skills vary according to the delivery location and the time of year. This course is ideal for those progressing from the Level 2 Award in Practical Horticulture Skills. After successfully completing this course may students progress onto the RHS Certificate in Practical Horticulture.

Entry Requirements:

Just a keen interest in horticulture and gardening. It is advisable that learners complete the City and Guilds Level 2 Certificate in Practical Horticulture Skills prior to enrolling on this course.

Course Units:

There are 154 units to choose from, 37 credits that usually equate to 12 units are required to achieve the Award. Units are selected according to student interest, the site and seasonality. Examples include:

  • Assess soil texture and condition

  • Plant a container for seasonal display

  • Prune deciduous spring flowering shrubs

  • Prune free-standing fruit trees in winter

  • Harvest plants

  • Propagate by grafting

  • Identify plants by botanical name

  • Identify plant diseases and disorders

Learning and Assessment:

Every student builds up a portfolio of evidence, which is a record of the practical assessments that have been completed. Student’s practical skills are assessed through observation of practical work and assessor questioning confirms their understanding.

Costs that are mandatory for the course:

Students living in Liverpool City Region are funded through the Adult Education Budget so there are no tuition fees.

Costs that are optional for the course:

None – this course is free to Liverpool City Region residents.
