About the course
Brief Description of the Course:
This is a roll on / roll off course that is available to individuals and members of community groups across Liverpool City Region. This qualification consists of 3 units, or ‘practical skills’. The skills vary according to the delivery location and the time of year. This course is ideal for those joining a horticultural qualification for the first time. After successfully completing this course most students progress onto the City and Guilds Level 1 Certificate in Practical Horticulture Skills.

Court Hey Park, Knowsley
St Michaels in the City, L1
Dutch Farm, Garston
The Bridge Community Centre, Clubmoor
Entry Requirements:
Just a keen interest in horticulture and gardening.
Course Units:
There are 161 units to choose from, any 3 units are required to achieve the Award. Units are selected according to student interest, the site and seasonality. Examples include:
Prepare the ground for sowing or planting
Prepare and plant a hanging basket
Care for a planted area
Propagate by stem cuttings
Lift, divide and plant herbaceous perennials
Learning and Assessment:
Every student builds up a portfolio of evidence, which is a record of the practical assessments that have been completed. Student’s practical skills are assessed through observation of practical work and assessor questioning confirms their understanding.

Costs that are mandatory for the course:
Students living in Liverpool City Region are funded through the Adult Education Budget so there are no tuition fees.
Costs that are optional for the course:
None – this course is free to Liverpool City Region residents.
