About the course

The College offers opportunity to study at level 3 (A level equivalent) for students who wish to develop a comprehensive understanding of Football Studies encompassing practical techniques, academic knowledge and technical skills. It is a popular option for both school leavers and successful Level 2 Certificate students. The course incorporates a mix of practicals, classroom lectures, industry visits and case study exercises.

Self-employment in Sport and Physical Activity

Learners will develop knowledge and understanding of self-employment and apply this to develop a self-employment strategy within the context of the sport industry.

Enables learners to assess their own and others technical and tactical skills, and plan their own football development.

Sports Psychology - Optional

Develops understanding of the psychological dimensions of football and develops techniques to improve sporting performance.

Entry requirements & additional information

Entry requirements

These courses give a good technical training and education providing a vocational alternative to A Levels and the opportunity for successful students to progress to Higher Education. Students are normally aged 16 or over and the following requirements are needed:

Advanced Level 3 Suite:

  • Level 3 Extended Certificate in Sports Coaching - (360 GLH in 1 year)

An English GCSE at C (4) or higher plus a minimum of three others at C (4) or higher, including Maths or Science.

  • Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Sports Coaching - (540 GLH in 1 year)

An English GCSE at C (4) or higher plus a minimum of four others at C (4) or higher, including Maths and Science.

  • Level 3 Diploma in Sports Coaching - (720 GLH in 2 years)

An English GCSE at C (4) or higher plus a minimum of three others at C (4) or higher, including Maths or Science.

  • Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching - (1080 GLH in 2 years)

An English GCSE at C (4) or higher plus a minimum of four others at C (4) or higher, including Maths and Science.

In addition Learning Areas may apply specific agreed aptitude assessments that assist selection.

Applicants for all courses in Football. Studies are expected to show a strong commitment to the industry and a strong personal statement.

Learning and assessment

All work is assessed via assignments, presentations, practicals and reports. There are no formal examinations at the end of the course. Research Project in Sport module is externally assessed by Pearson.

Progression

As a course equivalent to A Level the Level 3 BTEC Diploma is an ideal spring board for progression to a Foundation Degree or Full Degree depending on UCAS points gained. Successful students may progress to higher education courses such as:

  • FdSc Football Coaching and Performance
  • FdSc Strength and Conditioning
  • FdSc Sports Coaching
  • A range of BA and BSc undergraduate degrees

These Foundation courses require a minimum of 48 plus UCAS points dependant on entry criteria for each individual university establishment.

Careers

Employment opportunities in Football and its related industries are currently very good. All programmes of study provide the qualification and experience for entry into the industry at an operational level with future prospects for management.
