Equine Summer Camp

About the course


This course ideal for people who wish to improve their riding both on the flat and over fences, you will also have the opportunity to expand your equine knowledge by using the science-based facilities we have at Myerscough College.

You will be able to work with our experienced staff using gait and rider analysis equipment, practical activities in the College laboratories like faecal egg counts.

Our experienced staff will work with students at their individual levels through a series of practical riding and theory lessons.

This course is an excellent opportunity to spend an intensive period focusing on your equine skills utilising the College’s excellent facilities and to meet other local riders with similar interests.

You may travel in each day or stabling is available at an additional cost of £20 per night.

Meals will not be provided but there are food outlets at Myerscough College where participants can purchase their own meals in addition to the venues above.

A full schedule with further details will be sent to participants before the Camp.

What are the entry requirements?.

Applicants will own / loan / share their own horse. They must be proficient in equine care and riding but sessions will be tailored for the level of riders present.

This programme is suitable for applicants age 16+.

How long is the course?

2.5 days 4th, 5th and 6th June.

Arrive Friday afternoon

Lessons Friday evening, Saturday, Sunday.

Depart Sunday afternoon 5pm.

What will the course involve?

*Rider balance, fitness, position, core strength and how it relates to horse and rider performance.

*Equine fitness, training, wellbeing and balance.

*Equine anatomy and physiology and how it relates to horse and rider performance.

*Equine behaviour and how it impacts on horse/rider relationships

*Maintenance of equine health and wellbeing including ailments and injuries.

What equipment will I need?

Candidates should wear:

Approved riding hats

Hats bearing only the EN1384 or BSEN1384 standard will not be accepted for students at Myerscough College

However, hats would be acceptable if they carry EN1384 or BSEN1384 and another standard such as those listed:

PAS 015 (1998 or 2011)

VG1 01.040 (2014-12)

ASTM F1163 (2004a or 04a onwards)


AS/NZS 3838 (2006 onwards)

Short or long riding boots (no muck boots, wellingtons etc except for use on the yards)



Body protector

Waterproof clothing

All horses must work in English tack and be safe in small group lessons.

This camp is not designed to tackle serious challenging behaviour presented by individual horses.

You will need to bring your horses own feed and utensils.

This course aims to provide an intense programme to improve both riding skills and supporting knowledge.

What other training programmes and progression opportunities are there?

Other part time courses are available in related subjects including clipping, behaviour, health, feeding and coaching.

Full time further and higher study programmes in equine studies are also available. An Access to Higher Education course can provide the ideal route for older learners aiming to get back into education and gain higher level qualifications.
