About the course

Plant Mechanics will typically work on the employers’ premises under supervision and where appropriate and safe to do so work on their own initiative. They work on a diverse range of tasks and machinery, plant equipment specific to their sector within the construction industry.This apprenticeship is ideally suited to those people who wish to pursue a career in an engineering discipline with a plant or plant hire company. In this role you could be working on a construction site, in a workshop, at heights and in awkward places to given specifications; repairing/ servicing vehicles/ machines for various construction operations. A challenging but rewarding career working in all weathers!

Entry requirements

To be eligible to undertake an apprenticeship a candidate must:

  • Be aged 16 or over & have officially left school
  • The recommended entry qualifications are 4 GCSEs at grade D/3 or higher. All potential apprentices will be required to complete a pre-course assessment to determine their suitability & achievement potential.
  • NOT have achieved any qualification at the same or a higher level, in the same subject that is being undertaken.
  • Be employed (NOT self employed) in the relevant occupational sector working at least 30 hours per week.
  • Must have the right to work in England & spend at least 50% of their working hours in England over the duration of the apprenticeship.
  • Must be a citizen of a country with in the European Economic Area (EEA) or have the right of abode in the UK AND have been ordinarily resident in the EEA for at least the previous 3 years on the first day of learning.
  • The entry requirements for an Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3), isn't solely based on academic ability. More importantly it relates to the job description you have. In order to gain the portfolio evidence for Level 3 you need to have supervisory responsibilities.

Learning and assessment

  • The course is delivered as part of a blended learning model incorporating classroom and practical training both on site and at work. This consists of 30 weeks of block training (residential) over 2 years, at Myerscough College Preston campus, with 20 weeks in the first year (5 x 4 week blocks) and a further 10 weeks in the second year (2 x 4 week blocks & 1 x 2 week block). Theory work & learning materials are delivered online with photographic, video & audio evidence being collected through the OneFile E-Portfolio platform.
  • The employer will have access to their apprentices OneFile E-Portfolio so they can monitor progress & work that has been set by the tutor.
  • The qualification is made up of a number of mandatory units designed to have maximum relevance to the job & integrate with day to day responsibilities.

    An employer must allow an apprentice 20% of their working week to undertake work required to complete their apprenticeship (this is a legal requirement) & will include any college attendance required.


Apprentices successfully completing the Level 2 Apprenticeship have opportunities to progress within the industry by continuing onto the Level 3 Apprenticeship in Construction Plant Maintenance or other Further Education courses.
