Level 2 City & Guilds Certificate of Competence in Climbing Trees and Aerial Rescue (CS38)

About the course


This Lantra Awards approved training course will introduce candidates to the skills required for accessing a tree using a rope and harness, and being able to carry out aerial rescue operations. In addition, to identify relevant health and safety legislation and industry good practice. The competence assessment taken after the training, is registered with City & Guilds NPTC and successful candidates will be awarded the City & Guilds NPTC Level 2 Award in Tree Climbing and Rescue qualification.

What are the entry requirements?

**To do this course you must have a head for heights, and it is important that you have a higher than average level of fitness**

Please note that we will not be able to provide training for anyone who we consider to be unfit for any reason.

Candidates will be expected to have a good knowledge of tree species associated with their working background. It is advised that all candidates view / download the City & Guilds Recognising Tree Species and Hazardous Trees workbook prior to undertaking the course. Please follow the link below.


Students are expected to provide their own equipment and PPE, they cannot be borrowed for training or assessment – see further information below.

It is advised that students hold a current First Aid certificate before taking this training.

How long is the course?

5 days with an assessment usually the following week, please allow a full day for this.

The training will take part on the college campus

Programme of Training (may be subject to change):

Monday Legislation, Knots, Equipment Inspection, Rope throwing

Tuesday Prussiking and change overs

Wednesday Tree Climbing and Branch Walking

Thursday Aerial Rescue

Friday Pole Rescue

How long will I be learning?

5 days with an assessment usually the following week, please allow a full day for this.

What equipment will I need?


Safety Helmet - Climbing (HSE Recommended mountaineering style helmet complying with BS EN 12492)

Gloves are recommended, gripper style gloves work well

Chainsaw trousers or work style trousers. Jeans are not recommended

Chainsaw boots (HSE Recommended to EN 381-3) or strong work style boots

Personal First Aid Kit (containing a large wound dressing)


Sharp knife

Suitable non snag outdoor clothing including waterproofs, you should be prepared for all weather conditions.

Hi visibility vest (short sleeved is acceptable)

Insect repellent and sun screen dependant on time of year

Additional Information

The above PPE, chainsaw, equipment etc. must be provided by the candidate attending

The instructor reserves the right to withdraw the training to candidates if the PPE or equipment is not in a safe condition

You are welcome to use your own tree climbing equipment; however, it must comply with current industry standards and be covered under a regular LOLER inspection regime. The instructor reserves the right to stop anyone using equipment they consider unfit for use.

How will I know if I am making progress?

The tutor will give feedback and guidance on the techniques, and you will build on the skills you learnt the previous day.
