Fancy a go at wood turning but never had the chance? Or last did wood turning at school, but never since? Then why not come on this entry level course in woodturning and live up to your promise! The taster session has been developed to take students with little or no experience as an introduction to the skills required and as a warm up course leading to a higher level if you so wish. All the pieces made can be taken home at the end of the day with no additional charge.

The course is delivered in partnership with Wooden Stuff Ltd. Lytham, Lancashire http://www.olivewoodturning.co.uk/ and will cover the following topics;

• Workshop safety

• Lathe appreciation

• Beginners tool techniques

• Sanding techniques

• Finishing techniques Projects

• Essential woodturning shape elements (Test piece - 'bumpy shiny stick')

• Students test piece to own design

Additional Information

(Please note this course is not held at the Myerscough College, Bilsborrow campus) Items listed may be altered without notice depending on availability of materials.

All tools, materials and tuition will be provided by Olivewoodturning at their specialist training workshop in Lytham. The material costs are included within the course fee.

Students are expected to wear suitable clothing (not loose fitting) or a specialist apron, suitable footwear (not canvas or open-toed). Loose fitting jewellery to be removed. Long hair should be tied back.

Food is not provided - please bring a packed lunch if required, or there is a McDonalds and Lidl store within walking distance of the venue. Coffee, tea and water will be provided.

The course will be conducted in accordance with any currently in-force government COVID-19 regulations.

Course Numbers and Duration

The course is for a maximum of 8 students The course is for 4 hours, normally on a Saturday or Sunday and runs from 10:00 - 14:00.

Company Information

Olivewoodturning, based in Lytham and run by Neil Relph, specialises in selling olive wood and making products from olive, particularly turned items. We have a 1200 sq. ft. workshop with a purpose built mezzanine floor for the Training Area. As well as turned items, we produce furniture such as tables. Recently we’ve produced kitchen worktops, breakfast bars and the bar top for Lytham Gin all in solid olive.

Tutor Information

Derek Bailey is the woodturning tutor for our courses. Derek has a wealth of experience both in woodturning and teaching. In the past, he was a production woodturner with his own business, based in Waterfoot, Rossendale. He’s been teaching at Olivewoodturning for over 6 years and has taught over 300 individuals.

Course Output

During the course, students produce two items. The first is a test piece, a “bumpy shiny stick” which teaches all the fundamentals of turning spindles. The second piece the students make from a book of shapes to their own design.
