Advanced Apprenticeship in Animal Care

About the course

These programmes cover a range of Animal Care skills and related practices. The main objectives of the courses are to ensure the development of practical skills, related background knowledge including health and safety issues and procedures. This is a practically based course aimed at developing the necessary skills and experience ideal for those working or seeking to work in a more supervisory capacity within the industry.

Course modules

Combined Competence and Knowledge Qualification

Implement, monitor and evaluate plans for the health and welfare on aniamls

Promote, monitor and maintain health, safety and security of the workplace

Plan the handling and restrain of animals

Plan, supervise and control the movement of animals

Plan the accommodation of animals

Monitor and evaluate the accommodation of animals

Plan diets and feeding regimes for animals

Monitor and evaluate the feeding of animals

Load and unload animals for transportation

Establish animals in a new environment

Promote and maintain the health and wellbeing of animals

Welcome, receive and care for visitors to sites

Handle animals to enable them to work effectively

Care for animals after they have worked

Provide advice and guidance on the choice and care of animals to prospective keepers

Assess the suitability of new environments for the placement of animals

Provide information on how to maintain the behaviour, health and welfare of animals

Recognise and interpret the behaviour of animals

Sell over the counter medicines and treatments for the care of animals

Organise the receipt and storage of goods in a retail environment

Help customers to choose products in a retail environment

Entry Criteria

Minimum of 4 GCSEs at grades A-C/4-9 including maths and English OR

a Vocational qualification Level 2, plus GCSE grade C/4 in both maths and English

& Must have a supervisory role within own organisation (or given the opportunity to)

NB: English & maths Functional Skills Level 2 will be accepted as an alternative to GCSEs.


Apprentices successfully completing the Advanced Apprenticeship have opportunities to progress within the industry by continuing onto Higher Education.


Typical jobs apprentices will be able to progress onto on completion of the Advanced Apprenticeship will depend on the qualifications and experience gained, but could include a range of roles within kennels and catteries, pet stores, grooming parlours, vets, animal collections / sanctuaries.
