Practical Cattle Handling and Management

About the course

Introduction:

This course aims to encourage all those who work with cattle to follow the highest standards of husbandry, this involves careful handling, understanding flight paths and cattle instinct. It is a practical course aimed at developing skills and competence in those who work with cattle across the sector.

What are the entry requirements?

A level of practical skills, you will need to be able to independently follow oral instructions, observe and report behaviours.

The keeping of livestock in the UK requires the completion of accurate written records, exemplars will be given to practice/record.

Experience of cattle is useful but not essential.

How long is the course?

5 hours

What will the course involve?

Learners will be briefed on best practice in cattle handling and management for specific production purposes. Learners will participate in the handling of cattle for a range of routine husbandry tasks. Learners will record tasks and other health/medication details as required.

How long will I be learning?

5 hours

What equipment will I need?

You will need standard farm PPE (personal protective equipment)

· Clean overalls

· Clean waterproof leggings

· Clean wellington boots

How will I know if I am making progress?

Tutor will give oral feedback on progress from performance in set tasks which will involve ability to adapt to changing situations.

From initial assessment of skills, the course aim is to develop professional competence through practice.

What course work will I be expected to complete?

This is a practical course, however, the keeping of all livestock in the UK requires the maintenance of accurate records, exemplars will be given to practice/use.

What can I expect to learn from this course?

· Appropriate cattle handling

· Codes of recommendations for the welfare of farmed cattle

· Routine husbandry tasks for cattle welfare

· Cattle flight paths/instincts

· Completion of documents associated with cattle management
