NPTC Level 2 Award in the Transport of Animals by Road (Short Journeys)

About the course

Brief Description of the Course:

This qualification has primarily been designed for people who transport farm animals or horses over 65km on short road journeys of up to and including eight hours.

The qualification is applicable the driver or attendant using road vehicles for transporting live vertebrate animals in connection with an economic activity and market, and for assembly centre staff handling animals.

Transporters or attendants who transport horses on the roads, on journeys over 40 miles and up to 8 hours, must hold a Certificate of Competence for short journeys. The qualification is required under legislation for anyone transporting horses in connection with economic or business activity. If you are transporting horses to compete as a professional then you are also required to hold a certificate.

  • Responsibilities when transporting animals

  • Planning a short journey by road

  • Suitability of the vehicle

  • Checking animals and fitness to travel

  • Causes and signs of stress in animals

  • Space allowances, stocking densities and segregation requirements

  • Handling and animal welfare in transit

  • Post-journey requirements

Learning and Assessment:

The course is assessed through an online multiple-choice exam at the end of the training.

Further Information:

The test can be taken in any one of the following animal species. Additional species can be selected at an extra cost.

  • Cattle & sheep

  • Pigs

  • Horses

  • Goats

This course is FREE for applicants who fulfil the criteria below (one species only). Other applicants will be billed £150. All applicants will need to pay £60 for each additional species.

* Not a prisoner or on remand

* Not in full time education or training *

* Students on a full time agriculture programme/apprenticeship at Myerscough College may apply for Princes Countryside Fund Vouchers to fund the course.

If the candidate can provide evidence of being in receipt of Universal Credit or is earning less than £20,319 per year (£30,600 for Liverpool City Region Residents) then this course is FREE. If candidates feel they may qualify for a fully funded course then they should email evidence of their benefits / wages to adultskillsenrolment@myerscough.ac.uk along with their full name, the course title and date of course booking.
