Intermediate Apprenticeship in Agriculture - Crop Production

About the course

This programme covers a range of Crop Production skills and related practices. The objectives of the course are to ensure the development of practical skills, related background knowledge including health and safety issues and procedures. It is suitable for those seeking or employed in their first role within the industry.

Programme Length

Work-based delivery over a minimum* of 18 months, dependent on initial assessment. *Minimum durations apply for 16 – 18 year old. 19 + learners can apply for accredited prior learning which may reduce the duration. Funding rules dictate a minimum of 12 months duration.

Venue

Work Based blended delivery programme consisting predominantly of on-site training and assessment within the workplace, supported by off-site technical training at local training and assessment venues as required. Course teaching, learning and assessment is enhanced through the effective use of e portfolio and distance learning resources to ensure flexible delivery is responsive to learner, employer and situational needs.

Combined Competence and Knowledge Qualification:

Level 2 Workbased Diploma in Agriculture (Crop Production)

(Minimum of 11 credits from the optional modules)

Functional Skills

Level 1 English

Level 1 Mathematics

Employee Rights and Responsibilities

Delivered and assessed through a workbook

Personal Learning and Thinking Skills

Assessment and recognition through a Record of Achievement

First Aid Certificate

1 Legislative Course e.g. PA1, Manual Handling, Tractor Driving and Related Operations

Maintain and develop personal performance

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others

Maintain site biosecurity and personal hygiene

Maintain the healthy growth of crops

Prepare and operate a tractor with attachments

Maintain equipment and machines

Plant crops

Identify and remove unwanted vegetation

Carry out harvesting operations by mechanical means

Prepare the storage area and monitor crops during storage

Transport harvested crops

Load and unload physical resources within the work area

Transport physical resource within the work area

Prepare and operate a power vehicle

Prepare and maintain structure and surfaces

Carry out habitat management

Implement environmental good practice at work

Welcome and receive and care for visitors to sites

Entry requirements & additional information

Entry requirements

Entry onto the apprenticeship is subject to a thorough initial assessment to clarify course appropriateness. Entrants must have the ability to achieve Level 1 Functional Skills in English and Mathematics and be able to cope with the Level 2 vocational qualification. Apprentices must have a contract of employment working for a minimum for 30 hours/week.

Progression

Apprentices successfully completing the Intermediate Apprenticeship have opportunities to progress within the industry by continuing onto the Advanced Apprenticeship in Agriculture or other Further Education courses.

Careers

Typical jobs apprentices will be able to progress onto on completion of the Intermediate Apprenticeship will depend on the qualifications and experience gained, but could include: farm worker, tractor driver.
