If you decide that you don’t want to attend College full-time but would prefer to get a job, earn a decent wage and gain qualifications whilst at work, then we’ve got a wide range of Apprenticeship options available to you.

Myerscough College has a long tradition of delivering work-based training to the landbased industries and has excellent connections with numerous employers. These range from small to multi-national companies.

Apprenticeships
(equivalent to five good GCSE passes)
Apprenticeships are increasingly recognised as the gold standard for work-based training. Already, more than 130,000 employers offer Apprenticeships. They are designed for anyone aged 16 or over who has a full-time job and needs a flexible training package to develop their skills. Myerscough achieves this by using a team of well-qualified, industry experienced, assessors who can tailor your training to suit your expertise and qualifications as well as meeting the needs of your employer. Apprenticeships at Myerscough incorporate NVQ Level 2 qualifications, Myerscough Functional Skills training and job related qualifications. Combined together they provide the knowledge and expertise that you need for your chosen career. They also provide the foundation for progression to an Advanced Apprenticeship.

Advanced Apprenticeships
(equivalent to two A level passes)
Advanced Apprenticeships follow a similar framework to that described alongside, with the exception that students work towards a more advanced NVQ Level 3 qualification in their chosen subject. To start this programme you should ideally have five GCSEs (grade C or above) or have completed an Apprenticeship. Once you’ve completed your Apprenticeship you can choose to carry on working, undertake more advanced training or even go on to a higher education degree course. Don’t forget, Myerscough College offers a comprehensive range of Foundation Degree and Honours Degree programmes, many of which offer the flexibility for part-time study.

How do Apprenticeships work?
Apprenticeships are designed with the help of the employers in the industry, so they offer a structured programme that takes you through the skills you need to do a job well. There are targets and checks to make sure that your employer is supporting you and you are making progress.

Apprentices can start their training at any time during the year. Prior to starting you would normally attend a College interview and undertake an initial assessment with a member of the work-based learning team. With all work-based courses our tutors arrange a meeting with you and your employer to develop an Individual Training Plan that suits your needs. This ensures that you get the training that’s going to maximise your career chances. So, with your involvement in your Individual Training Plan, you’ll always have a say in how you handle your job, your training - and your future! Each apprentice then has their own Work Based Assessor who visits them in the workplace every 4-6 weeks. This is to carry out training assessments, provide any additional support and to ensure that the welfare and health and safety needs of the apprentice are being met.

How long does it take?
In most cases you can expect it to take around 18 months to complete the Apprenticeship programme and a further 24 months to complete an Advanced Apprenticeship.

How much does it cost?
The qualification is normally fully funded by the National Apprencticeship Service for students aged under 19. A charge of £250 is payable by employers for students aged 19 or over (£350 for an Advanced Apprenticeship).

How much do I earn?
Apprentices do real jobs for real employers. So you’re paid while you learn. If you are entering work for the first time you will start earning from day one of your apprenticeship. The National Minimum Wage covers apprentices and, for a typical working week, apprentices must receive a minimum of £95. However, as skills develop, many employers tend to increase wages – in fact research has found that apprentices often earn an average of £170 per week.

Are there alternatives to an Apprenticeship?
You can also study for the work-based NVQs listed above, without going through the Apprenticeship framework. However, your employer will not be able to access the funding support available through Apprenticeships (although there may be other sources of support available - please enquire for the latest information).
