About the Course

This degree course is an innovative programme designed to envelop inclusive learning for the academic student. It is a progression route from the FdSc Farriery at Myerscough College, which provides the underpinning knowledge to enable students to progress to the Honours programme without having to undertake any further (bridging) modules. This Degree programme is a part-time course for the professionally-qualified and practising Farrier already working within the industry, and focuses on further advancement in processional farriery practice.

The course is ideal for those who want to enhance their qualifications and knowledge to enable progression within the industry.

Successful completion of the BSc (Hons) may also lead to professional accreditation as a Fellow of the Worshipful Company of Farriers.

Entry Criteria / Additional Information

All students will be expected to be working within the farriery industry as a practising Farrier and must be registered under the Farrier's Registration Act 1975. Students must be a minimum of 23 years of age and will have gained the Foundation Degree Farriery or the Associate of the Worshipful Company of Farriers, (which equates to general education qualifications at Foundation Degree level) or equivalent. Applicants for the BSc (Hons) top up who hold the Associate of Worshipful Company of Farriers (WCF) will be expected to undertaken a bespoke bridging course at Myerscough prior to commencing on the BSc (Hons) top up. It will be necessary for them to complete four modules "Equine Biomechanics for Farriery", "Analysis of Statics and Dynamics", "Lameness Diagnosis and Diagnostic Imagery of the Equine Foot", and "Clinical Case Study - Farriery". Successful completion of these modules will ensure that students holding the AWCF qualification will have the necessary knowledge and skills required to study at Level 3. Consideration may be given to certain other qualifications, for example Veterinary qualifications and overseas qualifications. Applicants are encouraged to produce evidence of their potential to benefit from the course. Transferable/Key Skills and AS levels may be used to contribute to the entry requirement but they are not sufficient for entry on their own. Career experience plus evidence of study skills may also be considered.

List of Modules

Level 2
  • Research Methods - This module will help the student to develop a working knowledge of techniques used to enable appropriate decisions to be made in the areas of finance, human resources and marketing.
Level 3
  • Advanced Farriery Practice in the Treatment of Conformation Defects, Surgical and Pathological Conditions - This module explores and evaluates the effectiveness of farriery protocols and encourages the student to formulate further strategies for managing horses with conformational abnormalities. The response and change in biomechanical function of the horse will also be analysed throughout this module.
  • Farriery Considerations in the Developmental Juvenile Musculo-Skeletal System - This module will enable the student to relate farriery practice to the development of the horse from foal to 2 years and to evaluate farriery practice for managing developmental problems.
  • Double Dissertation - Farriery - This module will enable the student to demonstrate his/her ability to work independently in the production of a substantial piece of work. The freedom to nominate at topic of his or her own choice (in agreement with the tutor) allows the student to undertake a piece of work of special interests that demonstrates an in-depth investigation off an area of research.
  • Industrial Assessment and Verification Practices for Examiners - This module will allow the student to analyse training strategies and course content at all levels of the farriery training system where assessment validation and examination takes place and to judge and verify assessment decisions and technical standards of competence.

Industrial / Work Experience

All students will be expected to be working within the farriery industry. Many of the modules throughout the course will draw on and use the student's knowledge and familiarity within the working environment.

Assessments

Students will face a variety of assessments including Objective Structured Clinical Examinations, vocationally-specific research, projects, assignments, dissertation, technical articles, practical assessments and peer evaluation.

Possible Careers / Jobs

Students from this course will be equipped to become examiners and verifiers within the industry

Progression

Students completing the top-up degree will have the opportunity to progress onto taught post-graduate degrees or post-graduate degrees by research.
