The course covers a range of horticultural skills and related practices. The main objective of the course is to ensure the development of practical skills and related background knowledge

Entry Criteria / Additional Information

The course covers practical skills and relevant background knowledge. Learners need to be over 16 and in relevant vocational placement, and, if taken as part of an Advanced Apprenticeship needs to be minimum of 30 hours per week. Recent achievement in GCSE or relevant further education qualifications would be an advantage.

List of Units

The level 3 Diploma iin Work-based hoticulture (Sportsturf- Groundsman) is a competence based qualification covering a range of units, each unit having a credit value. To achieve the qualification a total of 57 credits are required. There are 12 Mandatory Units: (worth 51 credits)
  • Promote, monitor and maintain health, safety and security
  • Estimate and programme resource requirements for landscaping
  • Manage your own resources
  • Set and mark out landscape sites to establish grassed and planted areas
  • Evaluate ground and environmental conditions to establish grassed and planted areas
  • Prepare sites for soft landscape establishment
  • Establish grass swards
  • Plan the maintenance, repair and renovation of sports turf areas
  • Plan and set out sports areas
  • Maintain drainage systems
  • Maintain irrigation systems
  • Manage information for action
  • Optional Units The Learner also selects from the following range of optional units with various credit values, to a value of 6 credits.
  • Establish planted areas
  • Design and install drainage systems
  • Prepare for and maintain equipment and machines
  • Plan and manage the control of pests, diseases and disorders
  • Safe use and application of pesticides
  • Prepare to undertake and report on a field survey
  • Prepare sites for landscape works
  • Industrial / Work Experience

    All Learners are required to be in vocation related placement for a minimum of 30 hours per week.

    Additional Qualifications


    Learners studying for the Diploma as part of the Apprenticeship Framework also undertake the following:

  • Knowledge based element
  • - units of the Diploma in work based horticulture assessed using independent methods (GOLA - Global On-line Assessment)

  • Transferable skills - either Key Skills Application of Number level 2; Communication level 2; ICT level 1
    or Functional Skills Maths level 2; English level 2; ICT level 1


  • Additional Employer requirements:

  • Emergency First Aid (one day course approved by HSE)*
    Plus one other legislative or nationally recognised occupational test appropriate to the pathway chosen (e.g. NPTC Certificate of Competence in the Safe Use of Pesticides)

    *Where a certificate has an expiry date, it must be current at the time of completion of the Apprenticeship.

    The suitability of work placement providers for Learners is subject to a health and safety appraisal. This is reviewed regularly by Myerscough college staff.
