About the Course

This qualification is open to all new in service, pre service and pre employment teachers, trainers and tutors in the Lifelong Learning Sector. The certificate is designed for those who are employed in a full teaching role having responsibility for learners throughout the learning process and engaging in teaching on a range of academic levels within their subject specialism. Full Award trainees would be expected to use resources they have designed and evaluated, deliver learning across a range of levels, subjects and learner types, and contribute to a range of programmes of varying lengths. The programme leads to QTLS status.

Entry Criteria / Additional Information

All Certificate in Education entrants / applicants must have the following:-
  • A level 3 NQF qualification in their own subject specialism
  • Have an appropriate level of education (5 GCSEs at C and above or equivalent is a minimum qualification)
  • A level 2 NQF in literacy or equivalent (GCSE English C and above). Applicants who do not hold the level 2 in literacy or the equivalent should undertake the adult online L2 literacy qualification before starting the programme
  • 150 hours of teaching which may be voluntary over the course of the programme.
APL of a maximum of 10 credits will be given to entrants who are holders of a threshold award 'Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector' from any other awarding body providing it is at Level 1HE / 4NQF against the equivalent part of the Certificate programme. APL of a maximum of 20 credits will be given to entrants who are holders of a 'Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector' from any other awarding body providing it is at Level 1HE / 4NQF against the equivalent part of the Certificate programme.

Fees

£650 per academic year

List of Modules

The qualification is made up of 6, 20 credit modules; 3 modules at level 1HE / 4NQF (year one) and 3 modules at level 2HE / 5NQF (year two). The qualification comprises the following study and activities:
  • An initial assessment of literacy, numeracy and ICT skills and commencement of the Professional Development Portfolio
  • Module One: Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector
  • Module Two: Aligning Teaching, Learning and Assessment
  • Module Three: Teaching and Reflecting on own Practice (level four)
  • Module Four: Practitioner Research: An Action Research Approach
  • Module Five: Professional Values and Inclusive Practice
  • Module Six: Teaching and Reflecting on others Practice (level five).

Progression

Undergraduate trainees will have 120 credits at undergraduate level and can progress onto Combined Honours programmes, BA Education and CPD Framework at the University of Central Lancashire.

Special Education Needs and Disability

Prospective students who have a disability that may affect their studies should inform the College as soon as possible so that reasonable adjustments can be initiated as appropriate. Where necessary students will be asked for evidence to help identify appropriate adjustments.
