About the Course

This award fits within the framework for the in-service provision of Continuing Professional Development and is designed for those teaching or training in the Post-Compulsory sector, whether full-time or part-time. It is a collaborative venture involving the University of Central Lancashire and colleges throughout Lancashire and Cumbria. It is offered on a part-time, flexible basis. The framework builds upon a range of modules currently offered within the BA Education or initial teacher training programmes, and further modules will be collaboratively developed as the programme grows. The Programme has adopted the standards produced by the Institute for Learning and after extensive consultation within the post-compulsory sector.

Entry Criteria / Additional Information

This programme is intended for those teaching or training in post-compulsory education, and employment or experience in the sector is therefore a basic requirement of entry. However, as the modules involve academic writing and, in some cases, research, you should have professional qualifications or passes in a minimum of five appropriate subjects at GCE Ordinary level or GCSE or recognised equivalent, to indicate that you have appropriate skills for study. If you do not have such a qualification, it is possible to take a Diagnostic Appraisal as an exceptional entry.

List of Modules

The Certificate in Continuing Professional Development is made up of 1 module at level 1, 2 or 3 of the University CATS framework as shown below:
  • One module at level 1, 2 or 3
Modules may be taken at various centres at your own pace and convenience, and appropriate earlier learning may be accredited against particular modules in order to shorten your period of study. An important feature of the programme is the provision for Student-Initiated Modules, so that you can choose your own topic of study, relevant to your professional role or interests, in addition to the modules designed by the course team. Assessment All modules are assessed by coursework only, and assessment strategies are varied, including traditional essay-type assignments, presentations, self or peer evaluation, etc. Your assignment for the synoptic half-module, in which you will be likely to relate your other modules to your work situation and overall educational interests, will be individually designed and agreed with your tutor.

Progression

There are four main Programme Pathways:

  • CPD in Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum
  • CPD in Education Policy and Management
  • CPD in Inclusive Learning
  • CPD in Research
Each of these pathways offers awards at three levels, so that after your Certificate you may go on to gain an Advanced Certificate or a Diploma in that pathway, or a Certificate, Advanced Certificate or a Diploma in another pathway. If you have a Certificate in Education, you could even consider transferring to an Advanced Certificate or Diploma, and using module(s) you have studied for the Certificate in CPD, if you would like to move to a higher level of award. It is also possible to transfer to the BA Education, with a wide range of modules. Three of the CPD framework areas are linked to the three pathways of the MA Education, to enable future progression: Research, Leadership and Teaching and Training.
