(click image for details) Mark Tyson has worked at Rufford Park Golf and Country Club in Nottinghamshire since leaving school at 16 and has recently completed his NVQ Level 3 in Amenity Horticulture Sportsturf with Myerscough College.  

Jonathon Knowles, Workbased Training Co-ordinator from Myerscough College says, “When Mark completed his Level 3 qualification he was looking for a new challenge.  With some careers guidance from ourselves, Mark applied and was successful in getting a trainees’ placement in the USA at Westchester Golf and Country Club, New York State.  He has been there since May, living in on-site accommodation, working hard and further developing his greenkeeping experience.  When Mark returns to the UK, he intends to pick up his studies with Myerscough College again with a Level 4 Qualification and an Assessor Award”.

About the Course

The course comprises the NVQ level 3 in Amenity Horticulture Level 3 Certificate in Amenity Horticulture, Key Skills and 1 additional occupationally relevant qualification. The NVQ consists of nine units covering a range of amenity horticulture skills and related practices. The main objectives of the course are to ensure the development of practical skills, related background knowledge and health and safety issues and procedures.

Entry Criteria / Additional Information

These courses cover practical skills and relevant background knowledge. Learners need to be over 16 and in full time employment for more than 30 hours. A required level of achievement in GCSE or relevant further education qualifications would be an advantage.

List of Units

The NVQ level 3 qualification consists of 9 units Core units (mandatory and essential)
  • Estimate resources, requirements and programme work
  • Promote, monitor and maintain health, safety and security
  • Manage yourself
  • Manage information for action
Units specifically related to the Sportsturf qualification:
  • Create grassed and planted areas
  • Manage sports turf areas
  • Manage drainage and irrigation systems
  • Prepare and apply pesticides

Industrial / Work Experience

All Advanced Apprentice trainees are required to be in vocationally related employment for a minimum of 30 hours per week.

Additional Qualifications

Learners undertaking this course as part of an apprenticeship programme will also undertake Key Skills Qualifications. These are:

  • Working with others level 2

  • Improving own learning and performance level 2

  • Information technology level 1

  • Application of number* level 2

  • Communication skills* level 2

*If recent GCSE qualifications include Maths and/or English at level C or above, these can be used as concessions in place of taking the Key skill qualification.

In addition to these the learner will undertake the following vocational additional qualifications:

  • First Aid at Work (4 DAY COURSE)

  • one other legislative qualification , ie NPTC PA2 or PA6 (preparing and applying pesticides)

  • Level 3 certificate in Amenity Horticulture


Special Requirements

The suitability of work placement providers for Advanced Apprentice trainees is subject to a health and safety appraisal. This is reviewed regularly by Myerscough College staff. Suitable outdoor clothing and steel toe capped boots will be required
